I wait about 2 years to have final (March 1st 2011) Thea v1.0 and now Thea is as good as promised.
Im waiting from a bit more one year to have Octane 2.46b, I can wait still a year: I have confidence.
can you wait still 2 years for final Cycles? maybe not as after only one year you cry Octane have slow development!
Leave time to time. Cycles is too much early to be usable; Octane is old enough to be usable (and now I earn money with).

Perhaps the last two replies are right, and i was a bit harsh against RS. It is just that I love the quality of the rendering so much, that I get very frustrated battling the integration. I also agree that the quality of the Oczane renders is a lot better and faster than any other that I have seen or used. That is why I am trying to promote its use in Medical visualzation. It is just that the communication between the 3D Packages and the Octane renderer create a bottle neck that makes this impossible. Maybe I am just too impatient. One way or the other I will continue to support Octane in the medical community.

Octane and the RS team have a lot of potential. The only factor we are hoping to be pushed is time.
Now that the blender community might decrease (cause of cycles) I personally expect some changes in the prize policy.
Honestly I would prefer spending a little bit more for a package with faster updates and earlier embeded features and many of the commercial users might agree.
I like the philosophy of providing a stand alone solution but the exporters need more development too. And the importing / exporting time just takes too long.
The next release with a new kernel can make a big impact and I feel that this will make this discussion 'obsolete' and not the renderer.
GPU rendering is a big challenge today and I hope that RS will win it despite all ups and downs.

interesting news, brecht will be working on the render api [blender] for 2 months instead of cycles it self. We have time
and hopefully there will be a release in those two months

no, but seriously, Cycles is long from being usable. Of course once it will come, the work-flow and integration into Blender will probably beat Octane's, but it will offer the same speed and features? Who knows... The best thing to do is to continue using & supporting Octane, while keeping an eye on Cycles.

Yes, let's focus on finishing Octane to get a version for productions use as soon as possible.
Production usability is what counts, everthing else is just a toy that will never make it possible for you to earn money.
I still believe in Octane
I guess there is not enough manpower behind Cycles to beat Octane
Kind regards
Alain

Octane has a minimum of a 6 month headstart against Cycles....
Cycles preview is great and nice. But its not usable for Interiors and lacks of things like AO, alpha support, real Skysystem etc....
But for simple Productviz situations its very good. But thats all.
There are so many 3d packages out there with complicated Render Api's.
I dont think the integration of OR in a 3D packages Render APi is possible. There are so many of them.
If you integrate OR in Blender; the other 3d Package owners wants that too. And that will decelarate the OR- development of core features.
Instead of this, OR should integrate a timelinesystem in OR.

I agree completely! With a timeline system I think octane would be perfect!!!

When I have been pressing for tight integration into 3D packages for along time, most Octane fanboys turn me down and called me crazy... After cycles has appeared everyone is craving for this. Ironic. I guess everyone finally see the advantage of NOT having to duplicate endless features that are already present in 3D packs. I mean please Octane don't even bother trying to do a functional timeline nor animation, concentrate in the render kernel and plugin integration. For the last time.
I think Blender it should be the last app to be considered, they have Cycles and probably most won't switch to OR.
To make a functional timeline system is probably harder than writing a functional plugin for max, Softimage, Maya or whatever. The keyword being functional.
Are you in the position to have an opinion whether this or that is possible or is too difficult? I'm not, in fact I totally disagree. We've put men on the moon son.tungee wrote: There are so many 3d packages out there with complicated Render Api's.
