It wil be inaccurate and won't work on transparent objects or reflections.
If you want that kind of fog you can use the z-depth pass.

Exactly... and thats why i like to know rendertimes..to have an estimate on how long that would render on my machine.. and in my case specifically i know that karba used to have 2x gtx590 which is what i have on one of my machines! :)

nildoe. Here is the render time on bepeg4d fog scene, rendered on our quad GTX690 if this helps. I stopped at 23 minutes. I can only imagine what the animation time is for Karba unless they are using the cloud service. I would like to know as well.

Thx alot for that info..quad690 and 23min..wow..its not fast but it's also not that slow considering the effect...

On my dual590 it would take about 40min then..:(
Corei7, 6x GTX1070 (2 Inside and 4 in a CUBIX Xpander), 32GB Ram, Win10 64Bit Home, 3dsMax2017 64Bit, Octane for max 3 and LOVING IT!!!!

sorry, my mistake, when i have rebuilded the scene for the standalone, i completely forgot to pump up the caustic blur value, now is too low and there is a lot of noise :(
this is the result with caustic blur set to 1, could you check with yours 8 gpu monster ;)

here is a fast fog animation test rendered tonight with Octane Render v1.13, Path Tracing kernel at 1024 samples for 8':30" per frame @ 720 px with dual gtx 590 ;)
