I'm a bit feared everytime I hear "Autodesk" combined with the word "Investment" which could end suddenly in a nice press release where the target got aquired...

I used to think it's always a bad thing, but Softimage's development under Autodesk proved me wrong. That said I'm sure Refractive will do fine without it.

Now it seems as if the collaboration has turned into a buy out.

well, so long as they finish and provide the options that they listed when they let us buy, that's all they really have to do. I hope they keep developing for more than just Autodesk, but all us non-autodesk guys may just get screwed.

i think it is obvious for rsl to put the autodesk product line on top of their prio list. it's just the majority of pro users out there. but radiance has also clearly stated, that he really wants to have c4d included and of course other products of other companies too. and there was a daz studio plugin announced lately, which serves a totally different user base.

taking all this into account, i don't think rsl (now otoy) plans to limit the potential market. also this move was -of course- not happening overnight. i'm pretty sure the layout for this was set as soon the rsl-otoy partnership has begun; thus the decision to provide integration for as much as possible hosts (which came later) must have been part of the plan ever since. and even if autodesk takes more influence at some point in the future, they still might want to have a renderer which is available for a lot of other hosts and allows to interchange project data. octane as industry standard renderer? not the worst thing that could happen imo ;)

just my 2c...
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply
