viewtopic.php?f=44&t=51808&start=30#p259564 discusses the issue of displacement on the scalp material causing areas on the head surface to be cancelled out and also how to fix it.

Yep, removing a displacement map from the hair scalp removed the hole. Thanks. Its still a bit odd that it was changing with the camera angle though.
