fatrobotsneedlove wrote:A pack of 7 different 2k textures is $150. Wow.
EDIT: Ok, I found the thread on Polycount about it... Well, that's the price for the Unreal Engine asset, which is ridiculously expensive. I hope the actual assets for the Quixel Suit will be cheaper, otherwise it will be out of budget for A LOT of people... :|

On the same forum I found this:
Q: Another question. I use Octane render. Is there a plan to make a calibration profile for Octane?
A: Yes, we are currently working with Otoy to get full Octane support up and running.
Which is good news, I guess... But if the prices are gonna be that high, then... Well, screw them.

Yeah I was excited when I read they were calibrating for Octane as well. Some of the brickwork shots are particularly stunning. Someone on twitter that was in the beta posted some shots of them in Octane and they looked great.

But holy crap 20 2k textures would be the same price as an Octane license.

Apparently it was a mistake!
Okay guys I have talked to Teddy, I just dropped him off at his house. So basically what all this boils down to is miscommunication, the pack was released without the knowledge of Quixel and has been removed from the marked place per Quixels request as I´m sure some of you have seen. It was supposed to be released during circumstances, at another time, at another price.

The price on the Epic market place does therefore not reflect the price of the subscription of Megascans.

Teddy had no idea that the pack was even released until I told him as I picked him up, as it was released some 20 hours ago when he was still making his way back to Sweden from the united states.
He was obviously very concerned as this gives the completely wrong idea regarding price.

So I hope everybody can feel calm again and if there is anything else you want to know don´t hesitate to ask!

After my complaining post on that forum, this is the answer I got from Teddy Christopher Bergsman Lind, CEO of Quixel
Hey Rikk,

Yes, we were close to release almost two years ago. PBR fundamentally changed the game though. We deemed it such a massive industrial shift underway that I essentially needed to go back to the drawing board for the complete scan computation pipeline. Rewriting Megascans for physically based rendering aside from writing NDO/DDO/3DO was a tall order and has admittedly been more time consuming than I'd hoped for, but it had to be done. Not because rewriting 2 years of work is fun but because it is for the greater good for the end user.

A lot more than this happened along the way though, good stuff, which you will get to get a glimpse of as the Megascans beta hits April 30.

The reason we don't have facebook page comments as of a few months back is because they can't be routed through our support system the same way as facebook page messages can. This meant we kept missing a lot of them and this caused a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Well, if you read the rest of the posts they have made today, they aren't exactly refuting that the subscription prices will be similarly expensive. Just that 'they weren't ready to release details'. Quixel sucks. My suite has been broken for like six months. Even their new fixer patch doesn't work. $100 is a drop in the bucket compared to my Nuke, maya, vray, mari, Vue, and modo licenses, but it's not nothing. It should still freaking work. I'm really sick of all their promises that just keep getting delayed and delayed. Substance is 100% better, they just done have megascans.

Hell, let's just make our own scanner. I've got agisoft photoscan and have gotten some awesome results. That gets us Diffuse, Specular (with a polarizer), and Displacement. Not sure how we would do roughness or IOR, but I'm sure there's a way.

Or OTOY could start their own service. I'm sure the lightstage team could figure this out. LiveDB 2.0.

wtf

They kept missing them because they weren't routed through their support system? They can't just go on Facebook and read them?

nice, again, thanks for sharing this stuff!

but for me the most interesting thing is this

seen some teasers from Billy Brooks (one of OTOYs team member) a while ago showing some videos with mscans..just insane amount of details!!!

I wouldn't even like to hear how much the end product would cost..(if it would be made with something like lightstage) - well, don't expect others to work for free..

I'm not saying Quixel is perfectly stable software (by no means,.. I have to put it aside 'cos it was painful to work with it at some moments, but..) clearing new grounds & making a shift isn't so easy & not always goes as planed..personally I do understand Quixel Guys..-they have put tremendous amounts of work into that! why should they lower the price?..though I do believe math will be done & price will be reasonable & competitive for the service they provide.

facebook (as many other social platforms) is a mess - if You don't have dedicated person who reads comments whole day, there sometimes no way to keep track of everything if You have to do work..

Here are some of the works that have been created by the beta testers 100% with the Megascans beta. Few of those are rendered in Octane (I don't know which one). They look undeniably amazing.
