I do think that something should be posted in the demo questions section or somewhere publicly that features of 2.3 and above will require constant on internet connection.
CPU - i7-950 3.06 Ghz, 24GB Ram, Win7 x64, 2 display monitors, GeForce GTX 580 3GB Classified. I'm glad to say I LOVE OCTANE!
Unfortunately outages can and do happen on the server side as well. Look at Ubisoft which is a huge company. They have had numerous occasions on which their single player games could not be played for several hours, sometimes even days because the servers went down.DayVids wrote:I'm a little disappointed to see them turn in this direction, but I use internet constantly and rarely have outages, so it will likely not bother me at all
Refractive can't guarantee 100% server uptime, so even 99% would be a step backwards from where we are now. Using Octane in productions with tight schedules is pretty much out of the question then because you can't take the risk of missing a deadline due to connection or server problems.

Its 2010 if you dont have a internet connection you are either living in a cave or is too paranoid. Dont visit porn sites on your workstation and you wont get a trojan.
Seriously, few hysteric loudmouths speaking how they gonna loose clients "BECAUSE" of Octane for which they paid 100 euros in Beta is not even laughable...
Intel C4Q , 4G ram, GTX 285,
Yeah but you should not make 75% of your client unhappy.. You can never make everyone happy.

I perfectly understand that Radiance and his team make great effort to bring us the best possible tool, and I also understand that sickness can also be difficult to manage while working hard at the same time, and I thank Radiance a lot for its strength and willing, but as a customer much concerned by Octane, I also want this marvelous tool to be usable for all my works.
@GeorgoSK :
However, Octane requires a big investment in hardware to use it at the best, so money is not excluded of the problem.
The problem is simply that the fact that Octane will require an internet connection to work will make its use uncompatible with security conditions imposed by some clients and included in contracts.
So it means that Octane great quality will not be available for all clients. When you are an freelance with very few client, not being able to give them the best quality or comply to their security rules means no job !
It is not hystery or parano, it is the sad reality of the market.
Best regards,
Philippe

Please, understand that there are not only big studios working in CG. Octane price has no importance in the thing. It would be the same at any price.Seriously, few hysteric loudmouths speaking how they gonna loose clients "BECAUSE" of Octane for which they paid 100 euros in Beta is not even laughable

If we would just keep the post to a mild level, there shouldn't be a problem why we can't discuss what we feel about this; let's not attack each other. Radiance is not known for his patience towards ranting (it honors him to be this way if you ask me)
Roubal, do you realize that in -not that distant- future every single app you use will be accessed online? Sooner or later, that is the inevitable. Internet is super-safe if you know how (encript project folders, set up a firewall)... clients are stubborn human beings so good luck with that.
The only time I have seen problems with stolen data, guess what, some thiefs came PHISICALLY to the office and stole all the pcs. 80% of a two-month project had to be redone, ouch! (I wasn't there to experience this since it happened before I got hired). Susprisingly, the company did not lose the client for this.
I would like to know more about your security measures. Do you always meet in person to exchange material and for the final delivery, or do you email?

Are you Nosaradamus maybe? Are you really sure that all the big company has to provide internet access to all the employer just to let them use a program they purchase? I don't think so.Proupin wrote: Roubal, do you realize that in -not that distant- future every single app you use will be accessed online? Sooner or later, that is the inevitable. @Proupin : I explained that to Radiance, in PM, I think : Obviously, simples contact about prices, work previsions, are done by phone, but technical data are exchanged only at the company, and not even on an erasable support : no USB keys, but only burned CD and DVD, signed and dated, with a signed and dated certificate. Authorized persons on a project are very few and all have signed NDA documents.
The company creates hightech prototypes, and has lost much money in the past due to industrial spies. So they work the old way : No sensitive documents at all on internet (I had to drive 70Km each time had had to take instructions or delivery finished animations). The manager of the company is an "old school man" and his politic is clear : comply or leave.
I have even already too much insisted on other possibilities, and even if I have not yet been notified officially, last discussion on the topic clearly meant that now they will have a doubt on the reliability of my workflow and it is most probable that they will not call me again for a work.
Believe me, I don't open my big mouth for nothing : I would really like to have much work and more artistic things to do than technical animations, with no security constraint and not to have to spend hours on the road just to bring them a CD, but around here, there is much offer (two CG highschools in my town and a third one at 100km creating each year new artists coming on the market and many CG studios all around) and very few clients, and they are mainly in industry (the only companies with R&D and enough budget to afford 3D works).
Can you imagine that I have got no new client at all in two years despite much money and time spent in advertising and visiting companies ?
When job is rare, the client is the king. Don't give him what he wants only one time and next time he will ask someone else.

falcon76, you are NOT allowed to call me anything, do not point, that is rude and off-topic. I want to have a conversation not a flame war nor the thread getting closed. But yes, I think this is the inevitable future, cloud computing ftw. The horsepower will be hosted somewhere else, you'll pay a fee to use, hopefully a small amount. Warez will be totally erradicated, and the software companies will totally own us. For this to happen Internet transfer rates have to be much faster than they are now and more affordable if not free; so it won't happen next year...
Roubal, phew that is some hardcore clients you have. At least I hope they pay you accordingly man... But as I said, when this is standard to more and more software, your clients should have to change their mind. My advise to you, if you really want to keep using Octane with the new features and stuff, buy yourself a firewall router, open the Octane port and just LIE about it. Or do they also come to your office to check if you're behaving?

Hey take it easy! If someone predict the future and I call him Nostradamus I don't intend to offend, it's just a joke. Maybe your sense of humor is different by mine. I apologize.Proupin wrote:falcon76, you are NOT allowed to call me anything, do not point, that is rude and off-topic.
