Hi all,
As promised, i've prepared a little folder. You may download it here.
In this folder you'll find a capture of the error message, a simple cube .OBJ file (must be used in centimeter, not meter) and a simple normal map 8 bits RGB made from the error capture with the Nvidia plug-in for Photoshop.
To repeat the crash, you load the .OBJ in centimeter scale, you clic on the mesh node in graph editor to start de render, in node editor you change the material of the object to glossy and you load the normal map as image in the normal node.
If i try the same procedure in the graph editor : creating a mesh node, creating a glossy material node, creating a image texture node and connecting the image to the normal connector and the material to the mesh node, it doesn't crash.
My configuration is : Windows 7 Pro 64bits, Octane 1.022 beta 2.2, Nvidia GTX285 with 1 Gb ram, driver Geforce 197.45.
Hope this will help you.

I encountered the same problem two days ago with a heavy 9 MB NOR map (made with CrazyBump) in png, but as it worked fine with the same image converted in jpg (1MB) I thought that it was a memory load problem.
French Blender user - CPU : intel Quad QX9650 at 3GHz - 8GB of RAM - Windows 7 Pro 64 bits. Display GPU : GeForce GTX 480 (2 Samsung 2443BW-1920x1600 monitors). External GPUs : two EVGA GTX 580 3GB in a Cubix GPU-Xpander Pro 2. NVidia Driver : 368.22.
Was there ever any resolution to this?
I get the exact same error with a 295MB mesh(no textures). I have 3 material nodes plugged into the meshnode. Also, the materials are plugged in the wrong spots when opening the scene, and one is unplugged.
I can just clear it if was a still image, but its an animation.
