Please keep in mind for your considerations that the VRAM is not only about poly count. Texture size and output resolution are also important factors.
I use 12GB and I am happy with it. I think 16GB Ram along with 580s would be fine...
I use a MaxRevo 1500 W.

3GB 590s is indeed 2 * 1,5 GB

double cores does not mean double speed because of different clock rate. I guess a 590 is 1,7 times faster compared to a 580 but please check out T3s comparsion chart.

Thanks Refracty

I just got this reply from a pc workshop

"It is not possible to run 3 x GTX590 cards in TRI-SLI, as each card is made with 2 x GTX580’s. So 2 GTX590 cards are 4 x GTX580 in Quad SLI. 3 cards would be 6 x GTX580’s which won’t work. Would you like a quote with 2 x GTX590’s instead?"

does it maybe imply that I don not have to go for a TRI-SLI configuration?

Cheers

sli isn't needed for octane (in fact it should be turned off). octane is able to use as much cards/cuda cores available - just put in 8 590s, and octane will use all 8192 cores :)
The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply

I dont think you would be able to run 8 590 even if you had the money for it, im not sure but i think i read somewhere that the maximum gpus supported by nvidia or windows were 8... So 8 590 would in fact be 16 no? Since they are actually dual gpu cards?

Corei7, 6x GTX1070 (2 Inside and 4 in a CUBIX Xpander), 32GB Ram, Win10 64Bit Home, 3dsMax2017 64Bit, Octane for max 3 and LOVING IT!!!!

MSI GT72S 6QE Dominator Pro G win10Home, gtx 980m.

maybe. don't know about windows, but for linux the driver supports 16 devices in theory. afaik this is also limited by the mainboard bios, so it'll always be a game of chance.
but because of vram, i'd go for 8 580s anyway ;) http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... f=6&t=8215

I think if I were building a monster rig I would wait to see what Nvidia Kepler brings.
Apparently some cards are out in March/April although you might have to wait for a while for watercooled or 4? Gb versions.
Potentially there is a good speed up. The 'leaked' gaming numbers show 2x over the previous. pcie3.0 too.
The faster cards might be relatively expensive though
Don't know ...just mentioning it.

thanks guys, you all look to be a knowledgeable bunch. :D

i'll try to read more about the Kepler and will make my decision based on that.

If I would be in your situation I would do the following:
Get a motherboard with 4 slots (dual spacing) and two 580s (3 gig). So you have enough spacing for airflow. This is a good setup to start and no need for watercooling. Then you wait until april to see what is coming then and decide if you extend your system.
Just an idea.
