Here comes the new release beta 2.49b, which is a first release candidate for beta 2.5. It adds HDR output, a new colour picker and some more features and bug fixes.
Any feedback is very welcome and much appreciated. Since this version is a release candidate, we recommend not to use it for production work, where high reliability is important. Scenes stored in this version may not load in beta 2.46b.
This release was built with CUDA 4.0, which means that you should install the latest graphics driver (http://www.nvidia.com/page/drivers.html).
For Linux and Mac OS you also need to install the CUDA Toolkit 4.0 (http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-toolkit-40).
For Mac OS you also need the latest CUDA 4.0 driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/mac-driver-archive.html).
New features:
- Renders can now be saved as HDR images (OpenEXR and PNG 16bit)
- Direct lighting with diffuse GI takes diffuse reflection on glossy materials into account
- New color picker
- Output resolution can now be locked to viewport size
- Viewport status displays used/usable/total memory and graphically shows the amount of accounted and unaccounted memory
- Daylight and turntable animation are back
- Animation dialogs have logarithmic sliders
- Octane scene files store the render target filter of the node graph editor
- Updated interface for the cuda device manager interface
- Improved responsiveness of picking tools while rendering
- Tried to reduce CPU load while rendering (on Linux one core is still completely occupied by the UI)
- Nodes keep their collapse state in the node inspector when the node graph is changed
- Updated the tooltip of the start render button to indicate a node needs to be selected
- Tried to reduce "focus greed" of Octane during animation rendering (unfortunately Octane still grabs the focus every now and then, for reasons we haven't found out yet)
- Improved guessing where files can be found if whole projects got moved
- Multi-material picking now always displays a popup menu even if only one material got picked
- Fixed race condition with tone mapping with multiple GPUs (this should fix the lock ups during animation rendering)
- Fixed a problem where saving the preferences node writes out garbage if that text contains Unicode characters
- Fixed navigation when picking tools are enabled
- Fixed a bug in the render thread, causing problems when the film size gets changed very fast
- Fixed connection crash when an internal macro is displayed in the node stack editor
- Fixed shading bug on axis aligned light sources in PMC
- On Linux the PMC kernel doesn't work on pre-Fermi GPUs (i.e compute model 1.1 - 1.3) - we are still investigating
