I wonder if it would be advantageous if a developer came up with "mini cases", each holding a single video card and a fan. The boxes could be daisy chained together and perhaps sharing a single external power supply. Being separated, they would be easier to keep cool and scalable according to budgets.
I don't know if this is viable since it would require the replacement of the motherboard with a small board (that just has the video slot and data port) for it to make sense. If not, it would be nice if nVidia came up with a new type of card that bypassed motherboards and enabled inexpensive arrays of GPUs.
Does this sound like a good idea or does it make no sense?

Theoretically it is possible. This is basically what the cubix, and other expander units, do. PCIe 2.0 can handle up to 32 devices, if memory serves, could be way off on that. The card supplied with a cubix box just plugs into your PC and has a port for an external connection to the external box. Making a stackable system like you are talking about could be done with some skill. I'm not too sure about what controller the cubix, or other expander boxes, use to make sure there is no cross talk or signal degradation between the devices. That I think is where the heavy lifting comes in. Once one figures that out then it is just a simple matter of designing a PSU, or converting an existing one, and manufacturing the casing and PCB's. Would be an interesting idea, and sounds like what my brain is thinks radiance was talking about with this "other" company they're talking to.
