Hi everyone,
I've tried to use the render layer mask in the new AOV system but I haven't been able to make it work. Is there a place where I can find explanations on how to use it? And how can I give one number or another to my render layer mask pass if I have several objects with several numbers of layer ID ?
Thxs a lot for your explanations
Nico
Render Layer Mask in the new AOV system

What's render layer mask? They are not a native pass. Extracted and generated by plugin with some extraction from render layers. So you can't find in AOV. Try different ways to do for what you want please.

the new aov system seems to be faster than the previous (usual) info passes because it doesn't have to re-calculate 128 samples or more at the end of the beauty render (as redshift for example) so i wanted to use this way to win some seconds on each frame and it seems it doesn't work for now. Doesn't matter! Thxs

Probably author asked about this:

Could you, aoktar, clarify what do you mean by extracting extractions by extractions to extractions?
We had a tool previously, it has changed, we'd like to achieve the same thing.
And you answear this way to a user requesting for help? It's simply rude.

You'll find Render Layer MAsks in "Render AOV Group". As it was before.nicolectro wrote:Hi everyone,

Just don't run EXR (Octane) file format cause it will disapear. Use standard EXR format.
Oh and a news from today - standard EXR will work with PIZ compression but will not work with DWAA compression. EXR Octane works with DWAA, but for example Blackmagic Fusion will not read EXR Octane format. Just so we know.
Old Layer Masks are not good, since are calculated by c4d internal render, so they cannot consider DOF or Motion Blur, and can only offer a brutal b&w mask of the geometry.
They were added in c4doctane plugin, when Octane did not have any pass related to Layer ID.
You should need to use Cryptomatte instead, available from v2018.1 or greater versions:

Bepe, I was under the impression that the "Custom" AOV was the new method to get the old Render Layer Mask result (white object on black background), wouldn't that be a better way instead of messing with Cryptomatte which can be kind of cluttered and harder to use as a basis for good clean selections in post?
(Haven't actually started working with the new AOV system in v2021 myself yet, as I'm still working on a bunch of projects started in v2020, so I'm not really familiar with the new system)

Cryptomatte support has been enhanced, and you can now have only few masks, using the Octane Object tag, with different names, so it is definitely the faster and more accurate way to get masks in Octane now, in my opinion.

how do you do that? I read one should use "Crypto Object Node Name" for a stable matte.
Without an object tag or with an object tag on standard settings the object is dark blue in the matte.
When changing Layer ID, Bake ID, or Object Color in the "Object Layer" tab, the object changes to green - but that's it. No other colors are available, no matter what settings I change or set.
Also, changing the name of the object tag has no effect whatsoever.
Best,
Marc
