One thing in playing with Hair shader I am seeing with BOTH (1) Melanin+Pheomelanin and (2) Albedo modes-
It is impossible to achieve a jet black color without pulling down roughness.
The only problem is that this then it creates a ridiculous amount of spec on the hair.
We will need an overall
(1) Specular adjustment control, and
(2) a Darkness control.
This way, we can, in any lighting, create soft jet-black dark hair without making it look super-reflective like mirror-hair.

Enabling AI light results in error:
To make the Standalone work again it's restart is required.

@Developers - I get crashes too when activating AI light.J.C wrote:Enabling AI light results in error:To make the Standalone work again it's restart is required.Code: Select all

Baking camera renders black in this XB2, and for same render attempt with exact same setup, in 2019.1 RC5, Bake renders fine.

I wish I had tested this sooner, but better late than never...
This hair shader needs work. Look at this, on a primitive cube this is the darkest I can get it using the Melanin values.
And - When used in a Composite material with a mask layer, the mask does not mask it out, which I had been hoping since there is no Opacity channel yet.
On the color - With the non-Albedo Melanin color mode, It ideally should go from white to black on extremes, right?
So, to function in any lighting on any mesh, with a good result, HAIR shader needs:
1) Opacity channel
2) Darkness multiplier, or a more extreme combo of Melanin, Pheomelanin, or Azimuthal Roughness
3) A Specular amount to work with the Longitudinal roughness.
4) Fix so that it can be masked in a Composite
I know once it has working Opacity I could layer Melanin or Mix it with a darker 2nd Hair using the Albedo color mode, I guess, to darken it.
But it just would be better if it could work 'Out of the Box' with a full suite of parameter options (White to Black, roughness/specular extremes).
Otherwise it's like half-finished and always needs a workaround augment layer to make it look right.
EDIT
With Black Albedo, this is darkest I can get
