Hi there, I have rencently downloaded the demo and have not has much success with my scenes.

For starters, I model in 3dsmax and when I export to Octane as an OBJ all the objects in the scene have the same material despite the fact they have different material in 3dsmax. So I started to select each object I modeled which I wanted to have a different material and change its mesh color. This is how I now have different triangle on the nodes in octane to plug in different materials. Can someone explain how this really works. What I am doing, is it the way is should be done. - scene/model prep.

In regards to interior scenes. I have change the material of the mesh the represents the window glass to specular, but I cannot get the sun to shine into the space. Can someone please point me to some help material to get some sun light into the spaces.?

Thanks! BTW this technology is awesome

check the video page for "how to get started" tutorials http://www.refractivesoftware.com/videos.html, also, check this thread for the correct export options http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... f=21&t=362
Also on regards of glass, in the demo version direct light doesn't go thru transparent materials, so if you want your sun to "shine" take off the glass of the windows.

There are issues when the exported file has spaces in the file name and Octane does not find the MTL file. Ensure that there are no spaces when exporting.

As a paid customer, you'll have a access to the 3dMax script which many are using to ease exporting into Octane.

Also, you might want to have a look at this video series as it may answer other questions.

Thank you for the replies. How do you set the default possition of the camera on the OBJ file?

you don't, obj files don't contain that information, you'll have to do it manually, or use the plugins that are released with the licensed version ;)

Its a bit hard to purchase something without really trying it out or really understanding how it works. I am thankful Refractive offers a demo but some of the limitations such as not being able to render light through glass? are just silly. This is how you test how fast and clean the renderer is.

I need to do more research and ask more "basic" questions before I purchase. I have to say the videos were very useful !! thank you for the links.

If I am able to render a scene with the demo succesfully with-in the limitations then that is an idication this is the software for me -what do you think?

The current demo is not really representative of the Octane state - a lot of progress was made since. I guess that an update of the demo will be done when 2.3 beta is finished.

If you can make a decent result with the demo, then be assured that you will make it even better with the current pre2.3

So this is what I came up with:

Image

I deleted the glass... :?

I am having some "issues" the textures do not seem to keep their original colors why? how is this adjusted?

Can you store materials in Octane to use them in another scene? This is a great time saver in my "industry"

Thanks.

Yes, but not in the demo (if I remember correctly)

And the fireflies are almost gone in the latest update
