Hi, I am very interested in octanerender and I think this is the right direction. Good price and great concept for me.
My question is about "adding" or importing my own geometry into the Demo version, exported from Maya as .obj. When I "Add" the mesh with one shader it works great. But as soon as I Add mostly the same mesh with different materials and groups, all triangles, it loads but the Demo screen freeze and I need to End the Task to get out and start over.
I am running the demo on a core2 quad 2.4, 4 gig RAM and Nvidia Quadro 580 512. I works great with the demo project, slow but good. I tried reducing the triangle count on my mesh from 140K to 100K but is always the same situation, no more than one material. This is my testing machine as my Mac Pro has an ATI card. I am waiting for a fermi Mac card as the drivers are in the latest OS, but who knows when it will happen. My option now is this machine. I could buy a better GPU for it but I want to be sure with the software.
Is this a Demo limit or could be my machine?
This brings me to my next question. From what I read the license works on One machine, or one machine at a time. Could I buy one license for this PC and later use it only with my Mac? Could I use the license on a Mac with OSX and W7 one at a time, or do I need 2 separate licenses? I would like to have the flexibility, but in the end I think I will use it on the PC with a better GPU.
Adding an Object Mesh with multiple material. And license Q.

Hi,
One license works on one machine, even if you boot mutliple OS'es.
Regarding your material issue, are you sure you're exporting a valid .mtl file?
It's a material definition file that is exported together with your OBJ file, in the same directory usually.

Yes, I included the .mtl file generated by both Maya 2009 and 2011. But I still choose the .obj file to "Add" the mesh. When I don't include this mtl file the mesh imports with one material but it behaves very well inside octane, as it is supposed to. Is when this .mtl file is present in the same folder when the problem occurs. I can see the bar with the object name and it has the triangles so I know the materials are loaded, but when I touch the bar the object image appears in the Render Viewport in the default position and keeps rendering until the end but I can't do anything else with octane. No rotation, no menus active, nothing.
New test.
1.
I did tested an exported Maya obj scene with 3 simple objects, 2 cubes and a plane including 3 mat.
Same problem.
2.
I imported the Chess demo file and it worked fine.
Now, I added to this scene my simple scene and it loaded fine!
3.
Added the octaneaxis obj first. Fine
Then, added my complex object. Now it loads with all the mat and it behaves as it suppose to.
So the problem looks to me related to octane reading the mtl file exported from Maya. But when loaded after any Demo scene it fixes everything and I can work fine.
However this is a workaround.
Thanks for your time and patience.

Hi,
It's probably an export setting that's incorrect...
licensed customers have access to the plugins, which includes a plugin for maya.
if you want to try these you will have to wait till we release the next version as they are not available yet with the current demo versions.
