Hi,
Sorry for that long post but once you play with Octane in such a scene where each shot tooks only 30 sec, the temptation is too big and you cannot stop. So here are several shots, yes at this point we can really talk about shots, of my home sweet home scene. This is a scene I'm working on since several years and never found time to finish it, well it's not finished yet but it could produce some images anyway.
So the scene has about 1390000 tris !
The memory of my card (896mb) was quite full
Rendering varies from 20sec to 40sec !
No hdri used here
All the scene is enclosed in a cylinder mapped with a stellar background
I did not used spec maps
So don't forget the light is not earth light but cosmos
The navigation using the subsampling was a charm
I'll make some more shots using an hdr map for lighting and will try to apply some spec map in the limit of my memory.
Home sweet home

jesus enrico !
stunning, and those render times ?!
we should seriously think about making an animation soon,
imagine being able to render animations in this quality at HD resolutions with only 1 PC in a few days.
it completely removes the need for a renderfarm
beautifully detailed trees and grass
it looks like a little museum war-era maquette

What a beautiful scene you've created there. Those render times are killing me.
Keep it up Enrico! It's always refreshing to read a thead of yours. ;o))

Yeah this is quite amazing.
CPU are becoming lifeless zombie that only run the operating system
Multiple cards require no other things than multi slot mother board and strong power supply right?
That's gonna be insane

@Sam
Well yes, unfortunately I can see my power bill increasing this year too.

At work we got a small render farm of 10 CPU
The funny thing is that one GPU is faster than all those plastic boxes
Focus a lot on animation because my boss want it
And if you got strong animation features, large studios gonna buy tons of license

Sweet little world enrico,
Your materials and textures are always great.
Looks like a 1792mb or 2gb gpu are the ones to go for 'artiste' grade stuff.
The extra space would allow a full compliment of maps, some more polys, bigger render size...
As you have shown though you can do quite a lot with 896mb.
I agree with the other commentators, at 20-40s/ frame I think we need to see an animation soon.

well at work we are at 10min per frame or less (that's 10min per frame per rendernode) with standard CPU and 1080p resolution
So 30-40s is BLAZING fast !! And its unbiased !!!

I don't wanna be a show killer non the less I have to mention it.
From my experience with "unbiased" renderers over the last years
I know that IBL can be darn fast, take a look around. When it comes
to meshlights it won't be that fast anymore. ;o))
So I wouldn't get to excited to do animations. Just keep that in mind
for the future or you might be disapointed later. Of course it will be faster
as on CPU but not as fast as lighting the scene with HDRI maps only.
