Hello
Octane can render a lot of polys now, but 3dsmax file can be very heavy when you add several different trees for example. Max file around 1Go is not very handy.
It is urgent now to have something similar to vray proxy to reduce max file size.
(Xref scene files aren't rendered by octane if I'm right ?)
Thanks
Need octane proxy object

I work around with using railclone or forestpro to display point clouds. but its a pain.
Point could/proxy display for faster viewport would indeed very nice.

My main problem is : not have ability to use external files (as vray proxy) to reduce max file.
Display is more a hardware problem and project managing I think.

@HHbomb You can use Xref Objects
File / References / XRef Objects --- Add a max file that includes your tree or any other object. If you want to be able to tweak materials in your scene don't forget to check Merge Materials Otherwise it will just use the material in the original scene and that's it.
If you are going to use any of the objects that you Xref in your scene with MultiScatter or ForestPack, put the original object on a hidden layer because it will use twice the memory (one will pe the original object and for some reason it uses once more for the MultiScatter)
This way you can have a nice clean scene with lots of objects, and keep saving times slow.
@mbetke as far as i know RailClone will multiplicate you objects, but will not use them in a proxy way, so if you have something with 100 000 polygons, 10 objects with RailClone will become a 1 object x 1 000 000 polygons. (but maybe i'm wrong)

@lixai
Arrrrrghhhhhh, how can I have missed this.... ??????
I tried with Xref scenes, containers, ... (?)
I didn't try with Xref objects.... Thank you very much !!!!
Soooo cooool

Thanks lixai. Latest railclone2 can display point clouds like forest pro. But need to investigate further because I have a project with custom placed trees which blew up my scene.
with forestpack it rendered nice but tree placement was difficult. maybe I will use the "paint" mode from forestpack. but only ideas...

You can use RailClone Tools (Pro version only) to convert a RC object to stand-alone instances. Next, select all instances and turn on "Movable proxy". This procedure works flawlessly with Octane.lixai wrote:@mbetke as far as i know RailClone will multiplicate you objects, but will not use them in a proxy way, so if you have something with 100 000 polygons, 10 objects with RailClone will become a 1 object x 1 000 000 polygons. Currently RailClone supports instancing natively for VRay and Mental Ray. Hopefully we'll support additional engines in the future.
Xref Objects is not a solution : works well with few lite objects, but for a "real scene" it don't work, octane try to voxelise but it is very long (or impossible, I don't wait...)
toooo bad. NEED PROXIIIIIEEESSS
(ohhh : render failed,.... without xref objects it works)
