Before I go through the long slog of testing which driver works, does anyone have any advice as to which nvidia driver I should install with a system that uses both a 980 ti and a 1080 ti?

The suggestion is to use a Studio driver later than 450.xx, but the 980 ti doesn't have any Studio drivers listed on the Nvidia site.

I've been using Game Ready Drivers (GRD) and they have been working ok, but I've suddenly had some instability and thought I'd install the 'correct' driver. Currently using GRD 457.09

Should I install the Studio driver that supports the 1080 ti and hope for the best with the 980 ti?

Try to install Studio Driver and in Windows Device Manager try to force to install GTX 1050 driver on your 980 (you'll receive a warning Windows message) .
I have quite the same configuration and it works without problems.

You'll notice that in Windows Device Manager your card will result a GTX 1050, while in NVidia Control Panel you'll see the right card (980).

Thanks, giolets. I'll give that a go after I've finished the latest job.
