there are almost two kind of HMD (head-mounted display),:
1) with cell phone like Google Cardboard, Homido, Zeiss-one and Gear VR;
2) HMD for PC only like Oculus DK2 and HTC Vive.
A lot of new HMD are going to be presented during this year like Oculus Rift CV1, OSVR, Sony Playstation version and so on.
In my opinion, the best experience is still on Samsung Gear VR right now, with ORBX viewer and 16k cube maps, but you can also have a very good experiences with cheaper Google Cardboard. The freedom that the cell phone solution gives is amazing, the absence of cables and possibility to make presentation anywhere is unbitable
In Octane is very easy, just switch the camera model from the Thin-lens model to the Panoramic camera model and, depending of the HMD choosen, set the frame format, stereo options, and resolution for the final pano node rendering
