Overnight rendering and overheating

Hi guys

I'm getting into OctaneRender and I'm planning on modifying my system to be running two GTX 980s with the future possibility of adding a third.

The only concern I have currently is that I often leave a lot of rendering to work overnight, sometimes for several days at a time. I worry about overheating with GPU based rendering, and particularly with these powerful cards. My workstation is in a rented studio away from where I live and I'd be a bit worried that leaving the computer unattended could result in burning the building down or similar...

Of course I'm looking to make the system as stable as possible, upgrading the PSU to around 850W and spacing the cards apart.

Does anyone else keep their systems running overnight and is it safe to leave unattended if everything's been tuned correctly?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Yeah, leave them rendering unattended all the effin' time... when you have EVGA 980Ti Hybrids, it is all good pd. Are you not familiar with hybrid cards, or even water cooling in general?

No I'm not really familiar with any of this really, I've heard of the water-cooled cards but I had been looking at buying the standard non-water-cooled versions myself. Is that a more stable way to go in your opinion?

Yes.

But don't just take my word for it -- look closer at folks' specs around these forums. Tons of us have hybrids, and plenty have full custom loops, which is a water cooling system that runs water over the CPU and all GPUs, in one loop. Don't be scared pd. A hybrid is not going to take a piss inside your workstation. They are factory sealed and guaranteed to not leak. Max temps during full-blast Octane rendering with a EVGA Hybrid will likely be between 50°C and 60°C, and they will not need to throttle themselves down when they hit (83° I think is default for most) max temp.

Thanks for the explanation, that makes a lot of sense. I already have a watercooled CPU (which I want to replace due to loud fan noise of the H100) however getting into custom loops is a bit nervewracking because I'm not confident I'd know what I'm doing. Unless there's an off-the-shelf way of doing it?

Hybrids could be a route, the only thing is that since I'm already cooling my system it's got 3 fans going in the case already and I can't imagine where to find the space for two more, unless they can double up with existing ones?

A Thermaltake Core X5 or X9 case would solve that problem...
