I found out that using BC compression on an image texture that loads a sequence makes all kinds of problems:
Animation is not playing at render time
Node preview will crash C4D
Using BC compression on image sequences crash

A weird thing happened. I already had a scene prepared (C4D Octane Sequence compression.zip), and it was crashing instantaneously as soon as it tried to make the node preview when BC1 + animation was enabled. It crashed just now and I generated the attached bug report as requested.
But now I can't get it to crash anymore and I don't know why!
