Is there any OpenCL open testing going on?
I'm running a 2013 Mac Pro Trashcan with the Dual D700 FirePro's, can't wait to see what will happen with OpenCL is enabled.

Can't remember where the post is but I think one of the mods basically implied this may not even be viable anymore. Probably along with most of the other promised features for v3 which will probably a year late. Octane alpha v.51 anyone???

Open CL would be a nice option but not at the expense of holding Octane back from other features or advances. Personally, I would look into building a Hackintosh or changing platforms. I wouldn't hold your breath hoping Apple will reverse their trend of abandoning the pro market and catering to more consumer oriented ones. I saw the writing on the wall when the Mac Pro trashcan was released in 2013 and went the Hackintosh route - and I couldn't be happier!

But who knows, maybe Apple will surprise us and use NVIDIA GPU's in he new line of Trash Can Mac Pro's anticipated this year. Or maybe Apple will REALLY surprise us and not just flat out discontinue them

I have no issue with my 2013 Mac Pro. I have a eGPU that works great and that can become portable with my MacBook Pro; and 3 other GTX 980 Ti as slaves.
My Mac experience is great, I have no reason I would switch to PC.
But that was not what this post was about, I had read about the OpenCL development and was looking in on how it was going, that's all.

I was very excited to see OpenCL (or any sort of universal support) as a headlining feature of v3 as well. These responses from the Devs in another forum are not promising...

Please be aware, that there is a chance that we may run into unsurmountable problems and we can't get it working (Octane is not a simple path tracer anymore). I didn't run into any issues during my initial tests, but everybody tells me how bad it is, so we will have to see.

There is also a small possibility that AMD's CUDA implementation as part of AMD's Boltzman initiative could be used instead of an OpenCL implementation, but we will see, when we get there. Most likely it will not be useful for Octane.
Goldorak wrote:A major reason we took on OpenCL was to support the MacPro. Today the MacPro/OSX is still on OpenCL 1.2 which is very old - you have Android phones with full OCL 2.1 support coming this year through Vulkan. It is looking more and more likely that Metal is the future of GPGPU on OSX. If that's the case, we need to factor this into the long term OSX roadmap. In the meantime, we will do all we can do get Octane running with OCL 1.2, but as Marcus said, it's just at the bare minimum that Octane requires.

Yes. This was our pre-GDC announcement. Details will be posted shortly. TL;DR it's an major breakthrough.
