What do you think? Octane PC build

Hi,

So long story short. I bought an Imac (stupid move) now I'm going to sell and finally move to the dark side. Last time I used a PC was 10 years ago. Looking for a build which initially will have one GPU and then in a few months allow me to add a second. I'll be using Octane render for C4D.

I'm totally useless with part picking but a guy at work is looking at doing the same thing. Is there anything in this list that isn't going to be good?
Also if anyone has an opinion of the Del Ultrasharp 27 that would be great .
I'm sure everyone has there own variation here and there but I'm really just making sure that if i buy these parts I'm not going to regret it!
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
if the computer is just for Octane (gpu rendering) you dont wanna pay for Liquid Cpu cooling stuff. Spending extra a couple of bucks will takes you little longer in future. like 4-way gpu support instead 3, and a psu min. 1000W. Also 5820K has only 28pci-e lanes while some have 40. Gpu - 980ti a good choice, for better cooling buy a reference design. and a cheap video card that will be the 1st on the mboard (closest to cpu) helps a lot with usage of max Vram of 980ti and smooth system performance even during rendering with 980ti.

I'm sure some guys here really expert will help you more.

Hi Sadece,

Thanks for the reply - I'd be interested in other opinions on this build especially from the mighty Tom Glimpse :P .

I wish I understood more of this, I'm definitely trying to educate myself but every time I get close to purchase new issues are flagged.

I will get two of the 980ti, buying the second in a few months and then maybe after a year add a third. I have to be realistic and price is an issue - I'm already very close to my limit.

Would this configuration support 3 of these cards? What sized PSU would i need for two/three? I'm not overly concerned if the rest of the system is sluggish during a heavy render. I have a laptop and this machine is primarily for occasional freelance work and learning.

Thank for your help.

ok, let's comment some of Your choices & then I'll give some ideas, call them alternatives based on Your needs:

Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor - Nice, but if You jump into X99 paying extra for all the parts, it's worth to get 40Lanes CPU as well, or at least motherboard with PLX.. Though for Octane even quad core CPU seems to be fine - plus they have iGPU in their CPUs (APUs) or however You call them, so if You plug Your scree it will not use any vRAM..

NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler - Good One, but take a look into EK's Predator (they just announced it & have free worldwide shipping =) it's expandable AIO unit, that would allow You To put extra rad & hook GPUs if You need =) there are two versions 240 & 360.. - just look for some information on compatibiity.

MSI X99A SLI PLUS ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard - Nice one, but again..Man You're choosing 3x Non reference cooler equipped cards - with this mobo You would have heat issues.,no matter how good are Your case fans..pluss it has backplate that eats up breathing space between cards..so if You go this route You need mob with triple slot spacing (extra PCIe connector between 2nd & 3rd one =)

Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive x 2 - why to SSDs? Are You going to stripe those (RAID)? if so, then get NVMe drive connected via m.2. However if You're for the safety, better One SSD & pair of HHDs =) for the same price.. so You would have Original + copy inside + copy outside Your box..

MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Video Card - Nice, but non reference cooler & backplate screens for extra space between cards - I'm relly pissed to reviewers who test those cards alone - without taking into account multi GPU situations (ou,how good how good these are, but then company representatives stand out & say: if You're going to use multi GPU - then it's much more safe going reference coolers..)

Corsair Air 540 ATX Mid Tower Case - nice, but huge box, Have You seen it in person? any plans for the future? liquid cooling or something, tons of HDDs? =) if not, well, You might find smaller cases, unless You really like this beast.

EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply - for pair of cards at most..=) I mean Octane will not push Your PSU to the max, I would not use more than two GPUs on X99 with this.. go for 1000W for three & 1200W for Quad.. at least.. =) again, Octane will not push quad GPU + system more than 1kw, but rather application might..& healthy PSU is key [component for stability.

Thanks so much Tom, REALLY appreciate your help.
Here’s my updated build http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/gx8RP6
I have to be careful with cost - I’m pretty much at my limit. I could maybe squeeze a a little bit money more for a 40-lane processor but that might be my limit. With this build I want to go 2x980ti, With the option to add 1 more (total 3) in a years time.

Processor
Note: I will also be using Premiere, After Effects, C4D AR (standard render) and other usual edit/mograph apps.
So for 40 lanes it seems that this would be my option? - Intel Core i7-5930K (15m cache, up to 3.7GHz)
It’s +$300 so only want to do this if it’s going to make a significant difference.

Cooling
If the EK predator is the same or close to same price as the NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler I’ll pick one of these up.
Otherwise Ill have to go with the NZXT Kraken.

Motherboard
MSI X99A SLI PLUS ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard - So given that i’m now looking at cards with reference coolers (see below), this should be OK?
It would be fine for two cards? What about if i add that third?

Hard Drive
I’ll do some more research into this. I have a non-CG IT friend so he can help/advise me with this. Again I’m not totally sure on the terminology ‘Raid’ stripe etc, coming from owning an iMac :).

Graphics Card
Based on your advice I’ve looked for a reference cooler model. Hopefully I got this right:
Currently looking at 2 x MSI Geforce GTX 980 Ti 6GB (reference cooler). I may/may not add a third card next year.

Case
I’m really going with this because I’m not experienced at all in PC building and It’s what my friend bought. I can do more research into this unless you can recommend a specfic unit? Maybe in the future I will add another hard drive but anything too ‘custom’ and it’s probably going to be over my head.

PSU
So as my cards will be two 980ti initially, maybe 1 more in a year. I will look at 1000W PSU.

Thanks so much and if I ever see you in person, I'll be sure to get you a few beers ;)
