at the moment my set up is fine but I have an unused GTX480 which I want to use for Octane.

Cuda Toolkit Version 3.1 was responsable for the error.
After installing version 3.0 everything works fine.

I just type ./octanedemo in terminal. The splash screen is shown for a very short time and then the error message appears.
To prevent that there are some mistakes I installed a clean Ubuntu 64. Deinstalled all default nvidia drivers (sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-*). Installed the 256.44 ...

This error occures on Ubuntu 64 Bit 10.04 LTS with Xeon W3530 - maybe someone has an idea to solve that problem

I think about operating system and graphics card to use Octane Render.
(Processor I want to use is Xeon W3530 with 6GB RAM - only OS and graphics cards related questions)
My test results are:
Ubuntu 64-bit (E8500 + 2GB RAM + 8800GTS 512) - Octane benchmark scene: 2.4 Mega samples / sec
Windows XP ...
