I get this same message, though I'm running High Sierra and have x2 1080Ti connected via Thunderbolt 3… Might this be because the internal gpu is AMD, and my nVidia GPUs are external? I have all the Cuda and nVidia drivers running already for normal rendering.

Thanks aoktar… it must be something to do with my particular hierarchy and object setup… when I place the tag on the child object itself (in this case a plane with deformers applied), it doesn't work as you describe (and as you would expect), but when I place the ObjectTag further up the hierarchy ...
