As far as I known this preview are based on GPU and only for preview section. Rendering process is still based on CPU. But there is no block from maxwell to change to full GPU or CPUGPU in their next move.
I still love Octane all the way but Maxwell support and materials are still the best for me ...

I may be reading too much into the new internet connection requirement, but from what is being said my guess is 2.3 might have some sort of cloud computing option where users who want to link systems on a render have that option. Now that would be awesome! Looking forward to the next update

I highly recommend moi3d for opening up your solidworks models in and saving out an .obj Moi can import iges, step, or .sat from solidworks. There is a free demo to try on their site http://moi3d.com/
