I think James meant holding a competition in CGsociety and so as an approach to introduce more people about the capability of Octane Render and its forum.
Though, personally I think pure CG animation or Live action integration, they are all good and don't necessarily have to be set into two categories, unless both sides got enough numbers then we can make the competition more specified. What is good is the creativity, art direction, story, execution, etc. Picture tells the story itself and captivates its viewers, be it pure animation or integrated medium.

But the goal or regulation could be set clear, how much integration, modification, post-comp are allowed, for what type of competition. Or one competition can be set into different categories, e.g. pure animation cate, live action integration cate, and so on. It depends on how big the scale of competition is then I suppose.

The problem with post-production is that You can do it so heavy that octane rendered animation will be barely seen under heavy post.

Personally for me the biggest challenge in previous competitions was that You CANNOT USE POST-PRODUCTION.

And those were pure renders form octane ( noone touched them in photoshop ) - and thats what was making WOW of it. ( for me at least ) NO POST = BIG CHALLENGE

So I think same should be with animation. No post.

I can render grey cube in octane and do such a post that Your jaw will drop. ( not for the grey cube from Octane, but for the grey cube after post-production )

So this is really question for Octane team. Are they want to show pure octane animations, or just octane taking litlle part in all the production of animation.

But either way : post or not

It could be fun

I think if we should have pure octane rendered animations, eg no compositing of live footage or any kind,
just pure %100 octane animation frames.
maybe some post processing like gamma, curves, noise and lens effects, but a pure full CG animation rendered with octane only.

something like pixar's 'the birds' or 'gerry's game'.

no restrictions.
I have my arguments, but I think I've already covered that point.

As long as artist can proff octane was used, its completly up to a competiton board to select. they can select a pure octane vid. I honestly dont see any problems. Only restrictions - and those arnt nice.

mlody47 : start on the pure octane pixar short then :)
also, not personal minded m8 ( at all ) but it seems like an american scaring campaign, the fear of the evil or the right path. Just because you will be able to use other tools and equipment doesnt mean the octane bits will be reduced to theoretical estimates and values.

As I said. I will take part in this whtever the rules.

But some ppl are not capable of post-production. Becouse they didnt make any, ever.
And some ppl can do it so heavy that you wont know if I rendered it octane.

I think I agree with Radiance. Only post like in still comp. Chroma abberration , bloom, curves, nothing too fancy like half of the material not from Octane.

And yea the pixar birds are quite good example that you can render such a thing in octane with no post.
Ofcourse not 100% like the birds but you can get pretty close.

And this will be easier to judge.

[gk] imagine you got tight schedule, very small budget, and only octane. Its more challenging than using 10 other
programs. ;)

I think we'll go for that then, one demo user competition with single frame/images and license prizes, and an animation competition with strict rules, for commercial users.

Let's wait until 2.2 is out and all the exporter scripts first.
