Thank you Beppe and Face_off, but after a day of tests, I kinda give up on the effect. :(
It would be cool if, in addition to Fake Shadows, there will be something to control the intensity of the effect.

Don't give up! At some time it all clicks and makes sense, but I had to do a few scenes first to get the workflow right. The effect can be adjusted from 0 to full white-out with the scale slider in the scattering node. The biggest controlling factor is the size and placement of the cube. If you have a sample you can throw at us, it might help.

as paul said, please don't give up ;)
you can control the power of the effect with balancing the scattering power and the scale, set the phase to 0.8 ;)
here is a quick test with a low poly tree randomly instanciated in the back, is made with the integrated plugin for cinema 4d but the values are the same as 1.11 standalone:

I experimented a little with sss and light. There would be nice if there would be an extra option in blackbody or texture emitter to turn on/off such light and control the way it spreads.
