Hi ! I'm very indecisive about my futur GPU... I was about to purchase the GTX 980, but the more i read posts about it, the more the GTX 780 seems to be the best solution for Octane, for now... Unfortunatly, in my Mac Pro 4.1, the 1x6pin+1x8 pin is not feasible...
I don't understand from who the GTX 980 capacity amelioration should come. Otoy ? Nvidia ? Is there a possibility that the 980 never reach what we all expecting for ?

This is what I'd like to hear a clear answer on. Maybe it was mentioned already but missed in the various threads regarding this. As much as I'd like the 980 to give performance increase, for alot of us I don't think it's a huge deal if the 980 doesn't improve performance, we'd just like to get a definitive answer so we know which card to purchase.

Guys,

The '900 series talk' has been pretty widely covered. Luckily we've faced significant improvement of 900 series. Grimm reported here
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic. ... gs#p215860
980 is close to 780 so it is not that bad. It should draw less power (about 40-50W less than GTX 780 in Octane, but under heavy load the power savings may not be that significant).

What I could recommend - choose your card with respect to vram amount you need and budget

- If 3GB if fine 780Ti is a winner. Even 780 3GB is a great choice, not to mention - 580 3GB is still a great performer.
- If 4GB is what suits your needs go with 970 which is close to 980.
- If 6GB is a must - 780 6GB is the best you can get for money - but unluckily so hard to get these days. Then Titan (Black) - search for used pieces. And if you want to have 2 gpus titan Z for about 1500$ gives you power of 2xBlacks.

Shortly speaking - if you can get 6GB used cards like titan (black) for about 500-600$ just get it.

Hi!
I finally got the GTX 980 and every thing go right on Octane render 2.16, but...
in the Octane plugin for C4d, when i attempt to render, i got this message : "There is no CUDA device which is selected..."
In the Settings/Devices tab, the GTX 980 appears but it is automocally unchecked (???).

I'm having the same problem: the 980 is doing a great job with my new 4k monitor (31MU97).
But when it comes to Cinema or the native Octane app, I see no results... - no matter what I try.
Is there a solution on the way to get the 980 running with Octane ?

Best

Serge

Edit:

WORKS NOW !

I downgraded to Cuda Driver version 6.5.25 and updated to the latest Octane version 2.16.
Also the plugin for Cinema works now with the latest update (http://render.otoy.com/customerdownload ... Macosx.zip).

Strange, that I have to downgrade to a lower version of the Cuda Driver...

The same here.
GTX 980 works perfectly with Octane render standalone + plugin C4D with CUDA 6.5.25 & 10.1.43 (343.02.01f01). Drivers above don't work.
