Hi all,
if you're an avid user of the LiveDB you've certainly noticed that we have recently added a new "OTOY" category. It contains a new bundle of materials and textures created by Zargon (Geoff Holman), one of the artists at OTOY. You can freely use these materials in your OctaneRender projects and we plan to grow the texture library and add more materials soon.
Cheers!

How can I contribute materials? Is there an upload button?

This is very appreciated, we hope the livedb will grow up fast & robust!

A special pro category it's a good start, but LiveDB needs some organizational rethinking:
1.) Nobody should be able to directly save to OTOY "pro" category.
2.) User materials that pass a proper quality check by OTOY, should be eventually transferred to OTOY cat.
3.) The user categories should be cleaned up, they contain outdated materials created with old versions of Octane, or duplicates with just a difference in color or some other param. that should actually be exposed through input pins.
4.) Users should be able to edit / update / overwrite their materials (there was some talk about an online interface for this in old RS times)
5.) Users could maybe earn "brownie points" for uploading properly formatted materials, that pass the pro category check. (A material should have at least input pins for texture scale & color influence, and set up under neutral tone-mapping with a default setting for textures gamma. Speed optimizations & image texture size should also be considered.)
Hopefully the next Octane version will bring new possibilities for a better "black box" concept of material creation (a math node would come in handy - something to control several parameters with just one input value). An input pin parameter pre-set list (ie. a list that would contain parameter pre-sets for the given input pins of a material macro) would also greatly help in usability of the materials & lower duplication.

Hi Matej - these are all good points. We're definitely aiming in this direction with the addition of the OTOY materials. Curating user generated materials (and more) is a logical next step.
