That's a good point, I can't think of any reason you shouldn't be able to tweak settings in final render mode. I'll make a note to loosen up these restrictions at some point.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for confirming the workaround. I think the problem here is that I recently disabled live geometry updates in final render mode (it was causing problems with animations) but the way mesh smoothing works in Daz is it happens in the background, so by time it finishes the final render has already started and the smoothed geometry is ignored. What I'll do is to temporarily turn on Interactive Update while entering final render mode (the same thing that is already done when rendering animations).
