Hi,
always I have a problem when I use the displace on a surface joined to other without displace: the 2 surfaces stop to share the edges and the displace creates some holes. See the pic to understand: the 2 metal surfaces share the points and edges (they are part of one object) but the displace on one of them divides the polygons and creates the holes. How can smooth the displace at the surface borders? I can do with native render, it is very simple, with a weight map that controls the "amount" of the displace, but in octane I don't know if it is possible and how (weight maps don't work I think).
And sorry, but photoshop isn't a solution in this case: I can't smooth this texture to make a falloff of the displace on the borders, so I need a way to make a displace falloff on the borders of the surface if it is possible.
Thank you for any help.
Bye
Gianluca

If you are working with the conventional render time displacement this is not going to be possible for sure, because it only works from a single texture map. The new vertex displacement supports more features, so perhaps what you are looking for could be possible using it. If you want to share the scene, I could take a look at it here.

Thanks,

Hi,
thank you for the reply.
I sent you a private message with a very simple scene (I cut a very little part of the object, but in rendering you can see the problem).

I tried the new vertex displacement, but I failed, and I found it very slow to apply the displace with the same detail level. For sure I wrong something.

Thank you for the help.
Bye

I've been taking a look at your scene and well, using the conventional displacement you are not going to be able to smooth the displacement border for sure, unless this smoothing is already baked in the texture. You can play with the mid-level parameter to move the displacement up or down and try to hide the holes, but of course this only works for a fixed camera position, not for an animation where you need to see the object from several positions.

Thanks,
-Juanjo
