Hummingbird Wings and Motion Blur

Hello,

I have my C4D scene that is 30FPS and I have hummingbird wings flapping at 10 times per second. I applied motion blur but the result doesnt look fast enough. The wings are as simple as an Up, Middle, Down, state that animates over just three frames. I just cant get that blurred look of something moving rapidly as a hummingbird.

I can post a scene file for anyone at Otoy but I cant post it on the forum because its for a project and it cant be shown publicly yet.

If Otoy can help me understand why im not getting the results i expect that would be great.

Best,
Robert.

Try increasing your Time Sampling Per Frames value to 30 for starters. Hummingbird wings flap between 70 to 80 times per second, which translates to roughly three times per frame exposure, depending upon your FPS value. You can adjust your shutter angle to enhance the look, or soften it. Once you get the look ballparked, you can then tune in your Time Sampling Per Frames value.

All that said, this assumes that you can get Cinema to correctly animate the flap at said speed. But that is a different issue and I'll leave that to you for now.

Thank you, JayRoth

Your solution was correct for your set up. However, it doesn't work with my wings. I did find that changing the Octane Object Tag motion blur setting to "Transform/Vertex" worked. I had to add a little Time Shift in the Octane Camera Tag motion blur settings but it seems to be working now.

The render times are much higher however, so im wondering if the vertex option on the Object Tag is calculating the sub divided mesh which would have a lot more vertices than the non subdivided mesh. Maybe Otoy can chime in on that point?

JayRoth,

I also wanted to say i appreciate you taking the time to help me. You went above and beyond by supplying me a scene file and MP4 and am extremely grateful. The scene file was very helpful because i was able to use it as a reference and check my work and understanding of the settings. Cheers!
