As stated, one bad click in the height slider and boom, its all over (well not exactly I have 2 video cards so only 1 crashes the other allows the system to stay afloat.
Octane on the other hand does crash to desktop.

Lots of crashes here as well using displacement . And it is really easy to accidentally hit the slider too high and send Octane into a memory spasm.

I am starting to wonder if this release is not quite ready for prime time. It kind of makes me feel like I did some years back when I first purchased a beta license and patiently waited for the program to mature. It's ok though for me as I do know in the long run all these things will be ironed out and this is a process in which an amazing piece of software is perfected. It's just that long run seems to be taking..... a little longer than anticipated....

Hi, I have no problems with the High setting in Linux at all.
It is may the driver monitoring from Windows.
For experienced user only, test higher settings of:

Code: Select all
TdrDelay

Specifies the number of seconds that the GPU can delay the preempt request from the GPU scheduler. This is effectively the timeout threshold. The default value is 2 seconds.

KeyPath   : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
KeyValue  : TdrDelay
ValueType : REG_DWORD
ValueData : Number of seconds to delay. 2 seconds is the default value.

Cheers, mib

Hey. Will the net render with hamachi? I tried to check. octane range 25.0.0.0 saw but did not find slave. What washes be the reason? After hamachi creates a local network.

Great find, mine was set to 10 lowering it to 2 as suggested allowed me to click in the displacement value like a mad man and the system didn't crash. It does slow the reaction a bit but not crash. will try a few other values and see what works best.

Cheers, mib

Any instructions on how to make that TdrDelay adjustment on Mac?

Thanks.

(on the pic the value is zero, but it doesn’t show the slider even if it's >0). The Transform Value node also has no visible slider for translation, but when you try to "drag" the value, it works as it should (it doesn't go into manual input mode).

Thanks for the report. It will be fixed with the next release.

Octane on the other hand does crash to desktop.

This is a really tricky problem. The issue is that CUDA kernel runs can not be stopped as soon as they are queued. The only thing Octane can do is wait, until the kernel finishes and if it takes very long because of a very high displacement height/shift, then the OS will eventually pull the plug an kill the graphics driver. We could reduce the size of the work chunks, but this will have a very negative effect on performance, which is why we don't want to do it. You can see the effect if you reduce the render priority to low (the gPU s must have the "use priority" option enabled of course).

What we are going to do in the next release is to make the displacement height and shift fields slider-less, i.e. you either have to enter the values or use the RMB slider. This should avoid that you accidentally set a very high displacement height/shift.

We also plan on some optimizations that will make displacement work better (hopefully faster) with smooth displacement textures. This should also reduce the issue above. But we will never be able to solve it 100%.

You can't as far as I know.

I don't know. Network rendering should be used only over a real LAN and a 1GBit/s switch is very recommended. A network rendering master needs to send all the render data to the slaves, which can easily be a couple a of Gbytes. The Internet is too slow for that.
