Z-Depth Ignores depth max when placed in AOV Group

This has been driving me nuts for a little bit. I've seen a few posts here where people have been using AOV groups to comp on fast fog.
I've followed the post guides to a T and I can't seem to get it to work. Technique uses an opacity map with a z depth set as a mask. When I set the Z depth values in the Render AOV tab then bring in just a z depth the values instantly reset to default and ignore the Z depth max and environment depth I've initially set. I've updated to the latest version of octane and still see the issue.
I did read a post that perhaps I need to tonemap the z depth? But my expectation is if I add a composite AOV output layer and input a z-depth it should look just like my z-depth pass which it doesnt. PLUS when I do add it and look at my raw pass it also changes and disregards the distance.
WTF
