thanks! any idea where to start? is it something that can be done from within poser, or do I need to use another software?

Maybe, maybe not. I had that problem at some point and I could only fix it in MODO as I couldn't see which morph in the eye was the problem in Poser. Turned out to be a character morph in my case that also had eye morphs.
