Hi,
your Intel GPU is not currently supported by Apple Metal driver, you should need an eGPU box TB3, with AMD Radeon VII or 5700XT inside, to be able to use OctaneX now.
More AMD/Intel GPUs are going to be supported, by the next Apple Metal driver major update.

So would I also not be able to run Octane on a 2014 Mac mini with Intel Iris 1536 MB? I have it running Catalina smoothly but I assume I need a newer GPU?

Also what Mac Mini would be capable of running of Octane on Catalina?

We are expecting to have the full Metal support of Intel/AMD GPUs in the upcoming Mac Os 11 Big Sur, but I’m not expecting great performance from Intel GPUs
AMD GPUs are definitely better, in my opinion.

At the moment, only the following AMD GPUs are supported in OctaneX under Mac Os Catalina 10.15.6:

- Radeon Pro Vega II Duo - 412 OB*
- Radeon Pro Vega II - 206 OB
- Radeon VII - 200 OB
- 5700 XT - 170 OB
- Vega FE - ~161 OB
- Vega 64 -~148 OB
- Vega 56 - ~117 OB
- Vega 48 - 108 OB
- 5600M - 108 OB
- 5500M - 77 OB
- 5300M - ~nb
- Vega 20 - ~50 OB
- WX9100 - ~ nd

So you should need to add one of the supported AMD GPUs in an eGPU box connected via Thunderbolt 3, natively supported in Catalina, in order to be able to use OctaneX on your Mac now, like a Radeon VII or 5700 XT.

I’m using this solution for my iMac 27” 5k 2017, and it is working great!

Here are a couple of eGPU solutions used by other Mac Octane users:

https://www.razer.com/gaming-laptops/razer-core-v2
https://www.akitio.com/expansion/thunder3-pcie-box
*the last solution needs an external PSU to work, as explained here:

For Mac Mini 2014, you need to also purchase the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter:

It should, but you need to install Big Sur Beta, to have the latest Metal driver that supports Intel Skylake, and AMD Polaris GPUs.

Hi,
Intel GPUs are supported only in Big Sur 11.
Catalina 10.15.7 does not have the correct Apple Metal driver.
You need an Mac from 2016 or newer, with Intel Skylake or newer CPU/GPU.

Hi, I am having the same problem (after 2 years of the original post). I am receiving the same error massage, and I am running OctaneRender Cinema4D on Macbook Pro (13', 2018) with a similar GPU (Intel Iris 655 1536MB), but on macOS Monterey. Is it still not supported? Is there any way I can make it work? Thanks!!!

Hi,
Unfortunately old AMD GPUs and Intel GPUs are not supported anymore in new OctaneX PR12/13/14 for macOS 12 Monterey - there were some Apple Metal driver related issues.

You should need to go back to Big Sur 11.6.6, with OctaneX PR11, but it must to be said that Intel GPUs are not the best in terms of rendering speed, they are the slower GPUs you can have, and they also have issue with material previews in PR11.

This is why they are not supported anymore.

ciao,
Beppe
