How do we use the Color and or Float Vertex Texture nodes inside Octane Blender?

Never mind I figured it out - you just input the name of the vertex color into the node's field (after creating vertex paint in Blender). That's for the Color Vertex node though. In what situation and how would one use the Float Vertex - that is still a mystery to me.

You can use a Float Vertex Map as a mask for a texture in a material for example. You can consider it as gray level values assigned to vertices.

The Float Vertex node doesn't seem to be working for me (in Blender or SA). I must be doing something wrong. However, the Color Vertex node acts as a mask perfectly, especially if I simply create my vertex color in B&W.

That looks like a weight map. I used the Vertex paint. I will try it again using weight painting this time.

OK Yes it works with the Weight Painting. So Float Vertex node works with Weight Painting and Vertex Group. While Color Vertex node works with Vertex Painting and Color Group.

Thanks! I now fully understand the differences.

As you mentioned, we have 2 nodes, Float Vertex and Color Vertex. The first is dedicated to Vertex Groups, the second to Vertex Color Groups.
There are different ways to define Float Vertex and Color Vertex Groups in Blender. Weight Painting is just one of them.
