Can volumetrics be dissolved over time or distance?

Hi,

I'm creating some air streams on a plane, I'm doing this by using VDB clouds on a particle stream (with instances).
But is it somehow possible to dissolve the instances over time or distance from the object?

Hi,

If they are instances I can't figure how, because the instances are going to share all the shading parameters. Perhaps anybody else might have a workaround for that, but don't know how to render something like that.
