Constant crashing with latest versions on Mac

I'm on MacOS High Sierra, latest CUDA driver. 12-core Mac pro with GTX 980Ti.

With the earlier builds of v4, Octane was quite stable - but the the last few builds of 3.08 and 4.x have been a disaster on both R19 and R20. I get continual constant Render Failure!!! or it starts copying the scene file and ever ends, so I have to force quit. I'm not even pushing it with large or complex scenes (though if I do its almost certain to crash).

I'm pretty much done with Octane this point. I spend more time force-quitting and restarting than I do rendering. I'd love to hear if any one else is using the Mac version or it's just me! I've included the Log details but I doubt it will help much, it never seems to.

Anyway, it's back to the C4D native renderer for me.

Sounds like you may have problems on gpu setup. Have you tried on single gpu to render. Even physically removing every gpus and tested.?

Hi,
from the log you have ~5GB on unavailable VRAM, difficult to work with only 1GB of VRAM.

Code: Select all

unavailable:5.062Gb
How many monitors have you attached to 980ti?
Please, go to Apple menu About this Mac and share a screenshot with us, thanks.
Then go to System Preferences/CUDA and share another screenshot, thanks.
ciao Beppe

Good point! Your system only have 87Mb free VRAM for render accordingly to your log output. See VRAM used/free/max:872Mb/87Mb/6Gb. You should care about this kind of information. I believe you should have a sufficient amount of VRAM to let the renderer play fine. Otherwise, it's out of the game!

I don't understand: it's a 6GB card (6144MB), and I'm using a single Apple Display. There's only one GPU. I'm not loading massive scenes, so where's the VRAM gone?

Also, I've reverted back to V4-RC2-R1 and it seems to be behaving itself again.

I've updated to the last V4 on R19 and to seems to be working okay again. I have no idea what was going then – unless I had run an app that used the GPU VRAM and it hadn't cleared. In tests, the same scenes are using around 2GB, with 1.6GB free (out of core is 0/4GB – do you need to activate OOC, or does it do it automatically?).

I guess I'l need to keep an eye on VRAM usage from now on.

You have to activate by hand!

Ah, it is activated. RAM usage is 4GB; GPU head room is 512Mb.

Get another video card, and use it to drive the monitor and keep the 980ti for Octane only, or do what I did and buy a 1080ti with an external power supply, use that for Octane and the 980ti for the monitor.

It makes a big difference when you have a dedicated Octane card.
