Instancing in Octane for 3ds max.

So I'm hearing that instancing doesn't work in Octane for Max due to the way it outputs a single mesh and drives the memory usage through the roof.
Can anyone explain how to instance in octane for max with no memory increase?

I can't seem to find info on it anywhere.

Thank you.

Also why don't proxies hold onto their textures? Plus they come in at the wrong size! Grrr.

Hi jamestmather,
I do not find issues about size or textures using Octane Proxy.
As you can see, VRam remains the same using object instances

Thank you for the reply. Yes I finally figured it out.

1. export object to Octane Proxy
2. reimport Octane proxy
3. Retexture it
4. right click on the object - click make proxy movable (why??)
5. resize proxy to the correct size (aaargh - why????)
6. Now you can duplicate it.

Obviously the last two steps are necessary but for the life of me I cannot figure out why these steps are even there (usually you want to duplicate proxies with no memory footprint and usually you would like to start with them being the same size as the original...? Am I missing something? )

Hi jamestmather,
Re-texture or Resize is not necessary, Octane proxy has textueres and size.
I do not understand, could you share some screenshots about your workflow and these issues?

I've had issues with proxys being the wrong size before. Think it had something to do with the scale the original model was created in - mm/inches/m/whatever.
I used rescale world units utility and I think that cured it.

My proxy workflow is to copy, not instance the original geometry, convert the copy to octane proxy with replace original, select the new proxy and do a save as selected. Seems to work so far...
