NEED HELP - pci slot on mobo not working anymore [OBSOLETE]

Hi all,

First to forum manager.. I, and i would suspect many others, would love to see a new forum section for us to post about hardware like showing and discussing our builds, but also for our help to each other when encountering hardware or related issues.
Now I am posting it here in general, but that should be about general for Octane as software. And 'off topic'seems far too off topic, because our discussions about hardware are with goal to render in Octane.

So now my post about hardware issue.
It look like a pci slot on my Asus Rampage IV extreme motherboard is not working anymore.
I changed cards to make sure it was not the card.
It is the middle slot (it used to work btw).. but when I have changed cards lately it seems to have changed something.
Maybe I physically damaged something or maybe something else might be the problem?

Do you guys have any idea what can be going on or how I can check to see what is going on?

appreciate help...
greetz,

edited/added: In the meanwhile I tried Nvidia driver update, but that did not help.

OK, I have noticed something very strange

When sticking only one GPu in the mobo on slot 1... still slot 1 and 2 are with status 'in use'
and the monitor is working but the card is not recognized as Titan Black. (it was when stuck in slot 0)
i'll now try and stick in in slot2 and see what happens.

Nice monologue I am having here  Maybe I will be solving this by writing to myself :D

Edited/added1:
Stick in in slot2 gives smae result; 'no supported hardware detected'but monitor works and slot 1 and 2 are with status 'in use'
so it seems to be a problem in combination of slot 1 and 2.
For now do not have any idea how to proceed.

Edited/added2:
flashing bios did not help

Ok, little update here...

No physically damage spotted.

Asus adviced cmos reset, but that did not help.
I gave local pc shop technical service a shot, and they adviced to try a windows clean reinstall,
Which I have not done Yet.

Now, I did some more research in my own by trial and error, and I tried to stick in another type of gpu to see what happens, and surprisingly the TitanZ was working in this middle slot!!!?!?!!!!?
So, the Titan Black is not working in this pci, but the TitanZ is.
The Titan Black is working in the first slot.
Now this middles slot is x8, and the other slots are x16,
So it looks like the Titan Black is not working in th x8 slot..
The 780Ti was and the TitanZ is also.
What can be happening here?
I tried to find somethign on the internet about similar, but uptil now I am oblivious.
Tomorrow I might try another type of gpu in this X8 slot, and or try to stick the Titan Black in other pc with x8 slot to see if this happens on every x8 slot...
What a hazzle, but I was afraid that the mobo was broke, but now I think it is something with a Titan Black and the x8 slot .
To be continued...
If one of you have any idea what I can do next... That would be very welcome.

Cheers

I don't know what to tell you except that i find Asus MBs a bit buggy lately so it's not just your experience.

I have Dualxoen Asus Z10PE-D8-WS MBO and when i put 5 GPUs then system slowsdown and when rendering my cursor is going slow and eventually i'll get BSOD with Video driver error. With 4 GPUS works fine.
On the other side similar 5 GPU setup works fine on older Asus Dual Xeon Z9 MBO.

hi,
I never had any mobo trouble before; ran quad 580 and later triple 780ti on this board with no problems.
I am on speaking terms with Asus as well with Nvidia hopefully to resolve this issue.
As an escape later I can try to see if 1080Ti is working in this slot... then I will just rearrange my setups to have most cards rendering.
greetz,

Hi guys,
another update of this twilight zone issue

Both Asus and Nvidia are trying to help me, but have not solved the problem yet.
Asus thought it was about asking to much power and other issues,
and they are hard to convince that the problem is about what I think it is: a conflict of mobo and this specific card Titan Black and only with slot x8-2a/b

But I have hard proof it must be like that: I have the slots working with other setup with the 3 same cards
Jeroen Tapper: slot 1 (x6_1): Titan Black
Slot 3 (x8_2B): Titan Z
slot 6 (x8_4): Titan Black

What does not work is:
Jeroen Tapper: slot 1 (x6_1): Titan Black
Slot 3 (x8_2B): Titan Black
slot 6 (x8_4): Titan Z

SO all cards are working, slots are working, but not the Titan Black in slot x8_2a/b.
So looks like weird compatibility issue

strange huh...?

Anyway, I can render with all now, but the setup is less perfect of having less airflow for the Titan Z...
anyway, worse thing is the time I lost spending on this issue, and now wait if it can be solved by Asus.
Nvidia says: "compatibility need to solved from the motherboard manufacturer "

cheers,

Too bad you spoiled my monologue here... hihi (just kiddin')
Maybe it is helpful for other users in future when encountering same twilight zoned problem :D

ASUS tested and concludes mobo must be broke... I disagtree and still think it is some weird kind of compatibility issue,
but I 'll work around it and just stick another type of card in the specific slot.
cheers
