c4d octane volumetric object crash

hello all,

am simply trying to do a test scene with an aircraft in the sky with haze. even on a test scene with just some cubes cloned into the distance, if i use hdri, or daylight, soon as i turn on volume object , c4d crashes. have tried playing with the extremes on the medium scatter settings. did not help.

if i use just a sky hdri with my aircraft , everything is fine ; ) but that looks very unreal.

can't find anything on this topic.

any help greatly appreciated,

jontz71

Hi jontz71,
some volumes cloned in the distance could be a lot of data depending of the resolution of the volume.
Have you used the Render instance option?
You can use a single volume and restrict the effect with spheres as children.
As always some screenshot to better explain the issue, or even better a simple scene are greatly appreciated.
ciao beppe

thank you for your reply. i was simply doing a test scene for 6 8ft cubes cloned in Z space. a volume object was placed but not turned on. as soon as i turn it on c4d crashes. see attached file.

It's out of memory. Don't forget to read this page: https://docs.otoy.com/#cinema-4d-v3-plu ... -generator

don't see anything about "out of memory" on that link you just posted ?

also, to clarify i am just wanting to get volumetric fog in the scene. is Volume object only meant for clouds and liquids vs fog ?

If you read page you should see that's memory dependant object.

i have a super simple scene with 6 basic cubes and a plane. see attached. have a 16 core desktop, 30gig ram. nvidia Titan X pascal. do you think i should be having "out of memory" ?
am wondering if i am doing something very wrong that can easily be fixed ?

I'm not sure that you read completely and see voxels will spend RAM. I have 32gb ram and out-of-memory with your object. Being a super simple box that's not guarantee to spend small memory.

For Editor: 5400/5 * 2700/5 * 14925/5 -> 1080*540*2985 = 1740852000 voxels. it's 1.7Giga voxel count and propably much

so what am a doing wrong ? how can i get simple volumetric fog with volume object or is this not the correct use of volume object ?

Bigger voxel values
