Hi tartanpimpernel,
just change the emitters, the rules are the same about it.
attached a file with the scene shown in screeshot.

Thanks for the help paride4331, I had been using an ies opposed to a Sun and wasnt getting anywhere
just need to tighten up the contrast to the edge of the light volumes, drop some of the grain out and I'll be pretty much where I was hoping to be for my little project
has highlighted I really need to set some time aside and learn more about lighting
thanks again

Hi tartanpimpernel,
To adjust light and volume, you can simply make it through these parameters.

Something that I usually do to achieve direct light style spot lights, especially when looking to get volumetric spotlights like stage lights is to create a cylindrical mesh around the light to funnel the light. Works really well with pathtracing but also for direct light kernel. You can either make the cylinder cone shaped to remove the rays that aren't travelling directly forward or you can make the cylinder a lot longer in front of the light to achieve the same effect.

that last solve is a bit basic, but it seems to fit the real life situation, you basically built a reflector/flood light, just realised this could be achieved relatively painlessly through a max script .. or some object asset library (which I'm still on a lookut for a good one)
