How it works? ... if it is a displaced mesh it should work with Octane, but what can't be rendered are the LW shading plugins.

I believe it's 32-bit only. If you're running LW in 64 then it won't load.
I used it recently to create an animated displacement map, then applied the animated map to the water object in the main scene (back in 64 version).

Hot Ocean is both 32 & 64bit. The displacements work fine with Octane used it on a project myself.

Oh sorry. I'm using Mac. I have only found a 32-bit version for Mac. However if I'd known there was a 64 version for Windows I might have animated and rendered that scene in Windows only...

It's one very useful tool, but on big scale it starts to look repetitive.

For several months now I had forgotten that Denis Pontonnier has some excellent textures for animating water. I think I'm going to try them next time...
They're here:

Can you elaborate on how you got Hot to work with Octane? I'm trying to plug it into displacement node and nothing seems to be working. I do have UV on the geometry which I know has to be in place for displacement. I've tried plugging into texture image as procedural etc...nothing that looks correct.
Thanks for any input.

You can't plug anything into displacement node except a texture node plus the mesh needs to have UV.
use hot ocean to displace geometry, or if you use 2D hot ocean then use texture rasterizer.

You need to use it to displace traditionally in Lightwave. Then rounder that in Octane.
