Question about Image Based Lighting - Rotating the image.

Question about Image Based Lighting :

I have discovered 3D through Blender, and I have very few experience with Image Based Lighting.

In Octane, IBL gives very nice results and I wondered if it was possible to rotate the image used as light source around the scene ?

For example, to adjust the direction of the main light ray of your IBL to simulate light coming through a window.

Yes you can rotate an IBL because its just a texture applied in the environnement slot (it work applied to a sphere also)
But you can't do that currently in Octane. Its on the TODO list.

What you can try in Blender is to use an IBL and try to get shadows by putting a light where the sun is in your IBL ;)

or....

load the hdr into octane. load the room. figure out where the sun is in the image relative to the window (use features on the model to figure out alignment.)

then rotate your model in the 3d modelling package to align the window with the sun and reexport. delete the old model in octane and reimport. repeat until happy.

viola. sunlight through the window.

hope it works.

best.

Thank you James.

I had thought to this solution, it works of course but it is a bit tedious. I only wanted to know if it was possible inside Octane. ;)

It will be implemented through a rotation node that can alter the rotation of ANY image texture. So you will be able to add that to an HDRI file and then rotate it interactively in Octane. It is not implemented yet.

Very good news! I'm sure that the stable version will be amazing (the demo is already awesome !)
