Problems with Dirt Texture

I'm having a nightmare with the Dirt Texture.
I'm trying to use it in Invert Normal mode so that I can simulate chipped paint at the edge of an object. I can do it easily on some objects, but there are two problems.
In thin objects, it seems to pick up the other side of the object, as can be seen on the flat part of this test object (the box on the top is exactly what I want it to do).
If I really reduce the radius I can almost get it to work, but then the effect is not pronounced enough on the box.
Also, as you can see, it picks up the edges of the rounded corner which is obviously not disirable.
I use it to mix with a procedural and then to mix materials like the following, but you can see the effect is ruined by the flat bit.
Help, as at the moment, this is yet another limitation of the nodes which is driving me nuts.
Oh, I'm using Lightwave, but have exported it into Standalone, and the problem is the same there.
