Maya plugin and standalone

Hi!

I have recently downloaded the demo and the demo content for testing purposes of octane. i'm quite impressed of how fast it's. But there is some features lacking here. As i'm quite new with octane i would to know if they are big differences between standalone and the plugin for maya? Also, i don't know if there is some features that are not available in the demo. I was thinking about formats when batch rendering, like openexr and hdr for example and also render passes which is an essential part aren't there. I'm thinking about buying it but anyway i would like to know more so it can be useful for my workflow.

Hi Splendorrise,

You should be able to try both the standalone and Maya plugin demos (check the Maya tab of the downloads page ).

The differences between the 1.20 standalone demo and the 1.20 maya demo should be minimal. They both use the same rendering core and expose the same materials, kernels, camera and imager settings etc. The plugin is will provide full integration into Maya so that you will not need to use the standalone (although the licensing structure is such that you will need a standalone license to run the Maya plugin).

The limitations of the standalone demo is limited resolution, no LiveDB and not being able to save your project or render.

In the full version you can save as EXR or PNG (tone-mapped or not).
EXR is 32bpp.

Octane has some info passes but not your typical render passes. You can see these in the demo, they are the deep channel kernels. These include depth, material ID, normal, UV (http://render.otoy.com/manuals/Standalone/?page_id=289).

oki, is the "typical" render passes going to be implemented in future updates? It's very important to be able to do some further tweaks if.. displacement, is that implemented already or is it also coming in future updates?

Hi Splendor,

Sorry, i can't speak about our road-map too much.
We are always gathering the opinion of our users about the most wanted features and planning accordingly.
There are many things we would like to implement in future but don't have any dates for and cannot promise anything at this stage.
No, octane does not currently support displacement.

oki i understand. I'm in between in buying octane, but those two features are essential for me..I'll maybe buy and hope that those features will be added to octane sooner or later.
