Dark Edges on Object

I am using the demo version of Octane, saved an OBJ of a figure from Carrara and loaded it into Octane. I am starting to find my way around, but on this figure I always seem to get a dark edge (see right of the head in the screen capture). This is not a lighting issue, if I rotate around the object, the dark area stays on the edges, from whichever angle I am viewing from.

Any ideas what is causing this and how I can make it go away? I am using an HDRI Environment map for lighting.

Hi Phil,

Excessive bump mapping can sometimes cause black problems on edges, but I've never seen it cause it like this.
There must be something else going on.
Are you happy/allowed to post a zip of the scene?
The next best thing would be screenshots of the skin material setup.

PS: there is a 1.20 demo out now http://render.otoy.com/downloads.php

Thanks
Chris.

There is a transparent eyebrow geometry item which is causing a "self-shadow" issue with the forehead geometry, so set rayepsilon to 0 to get around this. And the bump value looks too high.

Thanks for the suggestions - I have updated the Demo to 1.2 and also loaded an updated driver for my graphics card. The "dark edges" issues seems to have gone away, but I am now getting the artifacting on the arm as in the attached screen grab. Even reducing the bump to zero does not cure this. Again, all ideas welcomed - and thanks for the help so far.

Could be too close to the camera - so check your camera nearClipDepth. If the scene is coming from Poser, try the Poser plugin demo.

No its not the camera clip depth, it still appears when I move the camera away. I am exporting the OBJ from Carrara - so much looking forward to the plugin for Carrara becoming available! I think it may have something to do with the geometry, although I checked the OBJ and it looks OK to me. Not to worry, just playing around trying to get a feel for it at the moment.

You can use the deep_channel_kernel kernel and there are about 7 different modes which help analyse geometry issues.
