I am looking for a user 3dsmax to show me the steps to follow to convert max file with Vray texture in multi object OBJ file for use on Octane. Do not have Vray. I'm new to 3Dsmax.

Can someone help me??

Thank you.

ok, let's take a look =) I think you don't need vray for that. simply open the file..it will probably give You a table saying You don't have vray, skip that, open render settings and chose Octane as a render engine. Then, go to Octane setings and You'll find a button to convert materials =) anyway.. You will have to do some custom work as from my experiance the converter doesn't do everything, so some tweeks should be done and You're ready to go. Do you want to use that model inside 3dsMax or looking to export to stanalone? =) drop a line if You need any more help, I'll try to make printscreens if You need them =)

cheers

so..bad news =) but I have to give You update on that =) so You would know what's happening and why this is happening =)

so here's a print-screen attached..

I've just circled few areas - one is multi-sub mat, other is two sided materials and the third one is supported materials for conversion.

The problem is that 3dsMax, or plugin couldn't convert these mats. What You have to do is: a) split these into diff objects with, different mats, apply them with individual mats b) have one mat with UVs unwrapped & paint some masks depending on which part of the object You want that the separate material would effect and do some work in Octane layering down mix material with masks.

So =) there's no easy way to do this =) but I'll try to figure out something. maybe - first solution would be good enough to work, if let's say..selecting by material ID and detaching as diff object..

B solution should work perfect (I've already used it) but it's far from shortest way of doing that =)so, sorry if i can't solve it fast =) maybe I'll try to write a tut on that or something.

Or maybe others will find different approach =) & please do share an option if You find any =)

Just install a Vray demo. This will help 3dsmax to recognize the materials. You don't need to render anything with vray.
Then open your max files and convert the materials with the simple button.
Now tweak the converted materials to make them look good with Octane.

Why do you need .obj files?

He wants to render in StandAlone =)need and .obj and .mtl files then so.. I do have Vray and Conversion doesn't happen =) maybe because multi-sub mat, double sided mat - I don't know for sure, at least for me it doesn't work =)

so one of the options is to split the object, different parts based on IDs, detach them, give unique materials and export..- You have 4objects (easier to work with), 4diff mats in MAX but then One object in Octane with four pins for materials =) Gues You can do the same without detaching, but it helps if Your want to tweak texture placements inside 3dsMax =)

please correct me if I'm wrong or theres a way to get everything done faster/easier =)
