I used a program called L3DT which can generates heightmaps as well terrain normals and other maps. Their is a standard edition and professional edition which you can use. Standard is freely available to download and use with resolution limit. The professional edition you have to buy for but can give you crazy texture resolutions to export to.

Nice, but I feel like the snow is too soft, needs some edges where is falls, and places where the top turns to ice in the sun. looks a little too blobby.
otherwise, awesome renders

Thanks

. will try to some improvements with the snow. I just used the sun/sky system to get better dynamic lighting and shadows, but I suppose this a cost of going for more realism. Might try with either lowering the sun so it's reaching the peaks or with a good HDR.

Looks good. Just needs some SubD to remove the shadow spikes.
